In a tight labor market, it pays to consider where résumés come from. Consider a passing comment that came with a curriculum vitae posted last April to the Web site of Statprobe, an $11 million drug-trial-research company based in Ann Arbor, Mich. A programmer explained that she was looking for a job because her current employer, one of Statprobe's competitors, was closing its office in Lexington, Ky., at the end of June. By July 1, Statprobe had opened an office in Lexington, staffing it with 50 of the competitor's former employees. In a highly competitive field, "if we can find the right people, we'll set up an office for them," notes Statprobe president Lora Schwab, whose 10-year-old Inc. 500 company has five offices nationwide.
