Flextime Becomes More Prevalent

In an effort to bolster retention, nearly 75% of companies now offer some form of flexible work schedule.

That's up from 66% in 1994, according to a survey by Hewitt Associates.

Among the various types of flexible schedules and the percentage of firms offering them are part-time jobs (47%), job sharing (28%), compressed work schedules (28%), and summer hours (12%).

Employers have also enhanced their benefits plans. Almost 90% of businesses offer child care aid. 47% provide elder care -- up from 40% in 1998 and just 24% in 1994. Almost a third of employers now also provide adoption assistance.

"Employers must offer these benefits to remain competitive in today's war for talent," says Carol Sladek, a Hewitt consultant.
