How can I generate income from my Web site?

Internet in Business mentor Bradley Feld responds to the following question from an inc.com visitor:
I'm a small-business person interested in generating income from my Web site. Should I go the traditional route and sell advertising space, offering all content for free? Or would I be better off creating a members-only, password-protected site, offering new visitors free sample content to entice them to purchase memberships?

Bradley Feld responds: In my experience dealing with larger businesses, Web advertising is a more likely revenue opportunity than selling memberships. However, because you have a small site, you probably don't generate the traffic that makes banner ads profitable. Instead, I suggest that you partner with companies that already have a lot oftraffic and would be willing to incorporate you into their network of sites.Check out iBoost as an example of such a network, although I need to add this disclaimer: I have an investment in iBoost.
