Ready to test the first "horseless carriage" on this day in 1896, Henry Ford realized the door of his Detroit workshed was too small. He knocked out some bricks, then took his Quadricycle to the streets. The gas-powered buggy, which sat atop bicycle wheels, proved a success; the workshed fared less well.

June is a great time to see live music. Toronto's North by Northeast festival, featuring modern rock and alternative music, starts today. You should also check out these events: the opera, jazz, and classical music festival Spoleto in Charleston, S.C. (today through June 11); the Telluride Bluegrass Festival (June 15—18); Jazz Aspen Snowmass (June 22—25); and Milwaukee's Summerfest, featuring everyone from Alan Jackson to Mary J. Blige (June 29—July 9).
