A Day Care Start-up
To clarify the start-up history of Children's Village, described in "The Bottom Line on Day Care" (May): It was conceived by me, while I was employed by Abt Associates, and was first established as a cooperative corporation, a "profit-making" entity, under Chapter 157. Abt Associates provided a small grant to cover my part-time salary and that of Maich Gardner, whom I hired to implement the idea. The company also set aside the space and permitted the idea to flourish, but the initiative, the concept, and much unpaid labor were my contribution.
The Children's Village was converted to a nonprofit corporation after organizational changes at Abt Associates and because staff and parents wished to be eligible for external subsidies available only to nonprofit corporations.
