Mr. Matschke hit the nail right on the head. Technology is being transferred out of the United States to foreign countries because of the short-term goals of major U.S. company executives. Our research and development company, Applied Fusion, has developed a competent process for welding dissimilar metals such as aluminum to steel. For every request from an American concern for information on this technology and on licensing this process, we average five requests from Japan, six from West Germany, and two or three from other countries.

Many U.S. engineers and scientists are afflicted with the NIH Syndrome -- Not Invented Here. When they are aware of technological breakthroughs from sources outside the company, they don't transmit them to corporate executives.It seems that West Germany and Japan count on capitalizing on technology developed by any source and are not preoccupied with who will get the credit.
