From giving away land in Kansas to building ski resorts in Kentucky some public officials will pay just about any price for a few jobs.

 

Bidding to recapture his old job, former Philadelphia mayor Frank Rizzo promised constituents that he would do whatever was necessary to bring new jobs to the nation's fourth largest city. Asked specifically what he had in mind, Rizzo, a man not known for rhetorical restraint, declared, "I'm going to bring all the people together that have all the money in this country, and I'm going to offer them free land. I'm going to offer them low interest rates, tax abatements. And if they want me to, I'll dance a jig up Broad Street." Voters in the City of Brotherly Love pondered this novel approach to economic development policy and chose newcomer W. Wilson Goode as their Democratic nominee instead. Fred Astaire was not on the ballot.
