Adoption Policy

Temple, Barker & Sloane Inc. may have one of the most unusual family-planning policies around. The management consulting firm in Lexington, Mass., gives any of its roughly 275 employees who adopt a child $1,000 toward the cost of processing the adoption. Becaused of fees and paperwork, these costs can run anywhere from $2,000 to $12,000 or higher.

"Insurance pays the bills for having a baby, but not for adopting one," says Gregory Muzzy, vice-president for finance and administration. "We wanted to remedy a situation that we saw as inequitable."
