Super Marketer

Who is to argue with the methodology of a wealthy man . . . especially a productivity and profitability leader in the industry? I think Dick Gromer's ("Super Market," October) smartest move was to eliminate his five small stores in favor of his single superstore. Still, I rather doubt that Gromer has to pursue pleasing everyone by maintaining such a huge inventory. Gromer might, in fact, find that the 80/20 rule could hold true for his store; that is, 80% of his sales are probably coming from only 20% of his items. At Stew Leonard's, we take the opposite route from Gromer's and stock 700 items rather than 20,000. I guess that proves there is no single formula for success in the food business.
