Sometimes Opposites Attract

 

Two decades ago, two major auto companies -- Chrysler Corp. and General Motors Corp. -- had already diversified into permanent magnet production ("Towaway Zone," Blue Chips, April). Their capacity to produce hard ferrites for loud-speakers and DC motors reduced the market for magnet producers. Now GM is investing not only for vertical integration, but also to produce the new ND-FE magnets for sale into the open market. We believe that there will be a significant growth in permanent magnet applications due to the merits of the ND-FE materials.
