A Theory By Any Other Name

"Theory F" (April) merits in "A" for Japan bashing but an "F" for itself. To state that fear is the force that makes Japanese management work is nonsense. This theory falls short in explaining how fear produced the Nissan Z-Car, the Honda CVCC engine, and the commercialization of the home video and compact disks.

I work in the headquarters of a $3.5-billion Japanese corporation. Rather than fear, I find a bit too much security and too high a tolerance for managerial error. We could do with a good dose of the American style of corporate fear of producing results or getting canned. I doubt there is a single foreigner working in a Japanese company who will say that management is the pivotal force in the business's success. With the outstanding products my company has to offer, I can only imagine what a competitive force we could be with better (and more fearful) management.
