Franchisor's Fall
[As the company's president under Ms. Brothers for eight months in 1984] I must compliment your magazine for an in-depth and, believe it or not, truly unbiased view of the Pop-Ins franchise saga and eventual downfall.
The Pop-Ins franchise program was a good one, and the organization could have gone on to success, as was predicted. We accomplished a great deal in the first six months that I was with the company, and had we continued in the same direction, the company would never have failed.
Each year close to 100 franchisors fail. Thirty percent or more have never sold a franchise, but that still leaves 70% who have taken people in and then abandoned them, often causing them to lose their life savings.
There are many unscrupulous companies and attorneys who take companies that have no chance or possibility for success into franchising. It's time for the International Franchise Association (IFA) and other franchise-governing bodies to act to save companies and the potential franchisees from losing their money and their dreams.
