Doonesbury creator markets products to benefit human rights and homeless causes.
Watch this month for the premier edition of "The Great Doonesbury Sellout," a catalog produced and marketed by Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau and Paul Hawken, founder of Smith & Hawken, the garden-supply company. The catalog will feature products designed to appeal to Doonesbury devotees, such as a Mr. Butts ashtray, a Dan Quayle polo shirt sporting a feather, and a New World Order Varsity Jacket. Asked to comment on the purpose of the catalog, Hawken deferred to the company spokesperson, Duke, the opportunistic soldier of fortune from the comic strip.
"We're out to maximize shareholder value," said Duke, speaking from his club in Kuwait. "You know all this stuff about the 1980s being the decade of greed and the 1990s ushering in a whole new set of values? Well, give Garry and Paul a message for me: this might be 1991, but it ain't the '90s yet, man." It should be noted, however, that all royalties from the licensing of the products will be donated to human-rights groups and the homeless.
For a copy of the catalog, write to Doonesbury Ltd., P.O. Box 67, Sausalito, CA 94966; or phone 415-331-1872.
