Talk about growth strategies: a start-up in Anchorage, Alaska, has set out to build longer, stronger bones. Partially state-funded, Autogenesis will introduce an "automator" for growing human bone, muscle, vascular, skin, and nerve tissue. Using a method pioneered in the Soviet Union, tissue is stimulated by making incremental cracks, where new cells can grow, in disfigured, damaged, and diseased limbs. CEO John Pursley says his patented device, which computerizes braces used in the procedure, should grow not only tissue but also the market. Because the device reduces the time, cost, and risks associated with the treatment, Pursley predicts it will bring in $15 million in revenues next year.
