These unsettling statistics come from a report published by the University of Massachusetts and researched by three university professors, including Barry Bluestone, coauthor of Negotiating the Future (Basic Books, 1992). The report raises particularly disturbing questions about the impact of manufacturing-job losses in the inner city. It also highlights the importance of even minimal education -- a high school diploma -- for entrance into the mainstream economy.
