Good Deal
Maryland Entrepreneur of the Year bought the Baltimore Orioles.
A funny thing happened to Stephen Geppi, founder of Diamond Comic Distributors, in Timonium, Md., at the banquet to honor the Maryland finalists for the 1993 Entrepreneur of the Year awards. He bought the Baltimore Orioles. Seems he struck up a conversation over dinner with some people from Ernst & Young who were putting together a consortium to acquire the Orioles franchise, and they asked Geppi if he'd care to join. They didn't have to ask twice. Geppi, a lifelong baseball fan, can now attend owners' meetings with the likes of television sports announcer Jim McKay and novelist Tom Clancy. By the way, Geppi was also named Maryland's Entrepreneur of the Year in the wholesale/distribution category.
