Fast-growing small companies. A poll of those on the 1993 Inc. 500 list shows 38% doing business globally, averaging 15% of sales from overseas. Canada and Mexico are already popular trading venues. The Commerce Department found most exporters aren't big; "very small" companies (those with fewer than 20 employees) accounted for $30 billion, or 12%, of U.S. exports in 1987.
