Job Interviews en Masse

A quick look at one company's unique appraoch to streamlining its interviewing process.

Hands On

Manager's Notebook

Do you find recruitment an overwhelming time drain? Keith Alper of Creative Producers Group, in St. Louis, has found an interviewing method that quickly narrows the job-applicant pool down to the strongest candidates--by checking out a dozen candidates in less than an hour. Potential hires at the 30-employee corporate-communications agency are invited to a 20-minute presentation about the company, followed by a question-and-answer period. Afterward, each candidate meets with a senior staff member for 5 minutes. According to Alper, many participants disqualify themselves right away by being late or asking inane questions. The few candidates who make the first cut return for a more in-depth interview. The ones who don't, Alper claims, appreciate not having wasted a lot of time.
