The In-House Lottery

Training with a twist--an in-house quiz enters employees with correct answers into a prize lottery.

Manager's Notebook

Want to make sure your employees understand your business? Shane Jones, CEO of Ace Personnel Inc., in Overland Park, Kans., found a quick and fun way to test and strengthen his staff's skills. The personnel agency, which had 1995 revenues of more than $7 million, holds an in-house quiz and lottery twice a week. Each staffer is given a ticket with a question about Ace's business. (A sample: List three of Ace's light-manufacturing clients that have air-conditioned environments.) Correctly answered tickets enter a drawing for $20. Especially important questions are asked repeatedly until the entire staff gets them right.
