Job Outlook Weakens
Hiring plans have dropped to a four-year low, a global survey finds.
Amid growing economic uncertainties, employers across the globe are cutting back on hiring in the months ahead, according to Manpower Inc., a Milwaukee-based employment services firm.
In the U.S. alone, 60 percent of 14,000 employers surveyed said they expected hiring to remain flat over the second quarter, while nine percent expected cuts, the firm reported.
Similar declines were found in surveys in Italy, Spain, Norway and China. In total, the firm surveyed 55,000 employers.
The results showed the weakest job outlook in more than four years, with only the transportation and public utilities sectors planning new jobs.
"A slowing in hiring intentions reflects a widespread wait-and-see approach among employers," Manpower CEO Jeffrey A. Joerres said in a statement. "However, the survey data points to a gradual and measured downshift, not a sudden and overwhelming change."
