Slower Hiring Ahead

Most U.S. employers aren't planning to create any more new jobs this year, a survey finds.

Facing a shaky economy and uncertainty around the election season, employers say they expect a continued decline in hiring for the rest the year, according to a survey by Manpower Employment.

While nearly a quarter of 14,000 U.S. businesses polled said they hope to increase hiring over the October-December quarter, 13 percent said they expect to cut back on staff, the Wisconsin-based staffing firm reported.

Though the downward trend is spread out across most industries, employers in the construction, education and public administration sectors said they expect weaker hiring to remain steady. Mining is the only sector currently looking to increase employment over the next quarter, the survey found.

"The continuing softness in hiring activity comes as no surprise as weakening market conditions are causing many companies to carefully adjust their hiring in line with the demand for their product or service," Manpower CEO Jeffrey A. Joerres said in a statement.
