More Employees Delaying Retirement

 

March 15, 2007 -- Nearly a fifth of small businesses reported that older workers were staying on past the usual retirement age of 65, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Professional Employer Organizations.

Of roughly 400 small-business employers polled, 16 percent said they had workers on staff between 60 and 64 years old, compared to just 9 percent five years ago, the survey found.

While two-thirds of respondents said their retirement-age employees continued to work because they liked their job or enjoyed the extra income, more than a third said older employees simply couldn't afford to retire, the survey found.
