Survey: U.S. Workers Scrimp on Vacations

 

April 25, 2007-- Compared with other nations, U.S. workers receive the fewest vacation days on average, while more than third aren't expected to use all of their allotted vacation days this year, a recent international survey found.

By contrast, employees in Great Britain, Germany, France, and Spain routinely take several weeks off every year, if not more, according to Expedia.com. On average, U.S. workers are given just 14 vacation days overall each year.

In a survey of more than 4,000 U.S. workers, 19 percent said they were forced to cancel vacation plans do to work responsibilities. Of those that do get away, up to 23 percent said they continue to check work-related e-mail and voicemail messages.

Yet, nearly 40 percent said they felt more productive and better about their jobs after returning from a vacation, the survey found.

"Spending quality time with friends and family away from the daily grind is good for all of us, and has been proven to yield incredible health and wellness benefits, as well as recharge our work batteries," Ted Jansen, Expedia.com's vice president of retail, said in a statement.
