Uniform Maker Faces Record Safety Fine

An Ohio-based uniform manufacturer is facing $2.78 million in fines following the death of an employee at a laundry plant in Tulsa, Okla., earlier this year, according to the Labor Department.

Cintas Corp., which employs 34,000 workers at 400 facilities, was cited with more than 40 "willful" violations of failing to shut down power to industrial equipment in the event of a jam, following an investigation by the agency's Occupational Safety and Health Administration. It was also cited for failing to protect employees from falling or being struck or pinned by a conveyer belt.

In March, Eleazar Torres Gomez fell into an industrial dryer as he tried to unclog wet laundry from a conveyer belt.

"Plant management at the Cintas Tulsa laundry facility ignored safety and health rules that could have prevented the death of this employee," OSHA Assistant Secretary Edwin Foulke Jr. said in a statement.
