Minority Business Owners Honored

 

The president of a Virginia-based veteran-owned business was named Minority Small Business Person of the Year at the National Minority Enterprise Development conference last week in Washington.

Lani Hay, a native Hawaiian, was among several honorees at the annual conference hosted by the Small Business Administration. Hay's company, Lanmark Technology, helps socially and economically disadvantaged businesses identify federal contracting opportunities.

Orneth La Corbiniere, a U.S. Virgin Islands native and the founder of Kelly's Cleaning Services, a janitorial firm, was recognized as National 8(a) Graduate of the Year. According to the SBA, Corbiniere's company received a total of $4 million in federal contracts over the past 10 years.

Jim House, director of the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization, and Jim Nicholson, the Secretary of Veteran Affairs, both received the Administrator's Leadership Awards for their commitment to the nation's minority small business community.

The awards ceremony followed a weeklong conference focusing on minority entrepreneurship, which included workshops for minority business owners and a reception at the White House.
