Amazon to Buy Mapping Start-up UpNext
Amazon appears to be following Apple’s lead into the mapping business.
Amazon will reportedly purchase the mapping start-up UpNext for an undisclosed amount some time next week, according to Reuters.
Though a purchase price has not been made public, UpNext investors will reportedly see a five-fold return on their investment.
It’s unclear what Amazon will be using the mapping services for, though Internet analyst Aaron Kessler told the outlet that the retailer might give its mobile devices, such as a new version of the Kindle Fire, mapping capabilities or perhaps the company could even build a smart phone.
The move also marks increased competition between the Internet retailer and tech rivals Google and Apple, according to Reuters.
The current Kindle Fire table requires users to download mapping apps through third parties or access online mapping services through the internet browser.
