Report: Online Video Viewing Jumps, Google Dominates

ComScore's latest report online video viewership is up, ad gazing is down, and Google still reigns supreme.

For all you keeping an eye on the video start-up space: A new report shows that more people are watching online videos, but less people are watching the video ads. In addition, Google remains the top video platform, with Facebook coming in second.  

Data tracker comScore released its July report which showed more than 184 million U.S. Internet users watched 36.9 billion online videos last month (up from 33 billion in June), and video ads counted for 20% of that video content, down from 25% in June. 

According to the report, more people watched videos on Google sites—primarily, of course, via YouTube. Google videos had a total of 157 million unique viewers, followed by Facebook (53 million) which topped Yahoo (48.7 million) for the first time.  

In June, Yahoo had more unique viewers than Facebook. 

Video ads reached a total of 51.6% of the U.S. population, with Google video ads reaching  25%.  Hulu was the leader in ad frequency, delivering an average of 46 video ads per person over the month.  ESPN wasn’t far behind, with 26 ads per viewer in the same time period.
