Shop floor accidents are costly in so many ways -- injured employees, lost work time, blips in productivity, increases in workers' compensation insurance -- thatwhen a day goes by without an accident, it's worth celebrating. Peavey Electronics, in Meridian, Miss., has a novel way of applauding safetytrack records: it runs an ongoing game of bingo.
The company issues bingo cards to employees. At the end of any day in which there has been no lost time due to accidents, a number is called over the publicaddress system. Making bingo is worth a $100 U.S. savings bond.
Announcing a shift free of accidents emphasizes the importance of safety. And bringing people closer to winning the $100 bond "makes a nice close to theday," reports Melia Peavey, the company's president.
