Looking for a high-impact alternative to plain old charitable donations? At Bagel Works Inc., a $4-million retail bagel chain based in Keene, N.H., each of the company's eight stores adopts a local not-for-profit organization for a year. Each year, employees nominate five community charities and then let customers vote. Winning groups receive a $500 cash donation, bagels, meeting space, permission to advertise in the store, and help from Bagel Works' employees, who are paid for the pro bono work.
