Is it unethical to make my company appear more established than it is?
Ethics in Business mentor Jeffrey Seglin responds: Lying is bad -- not to mention impractical -- because it always comes back to haunt you. Say you can't pay a creditor who is hounding you, so you send off an empty envelope. That is clearly wrong. It gets more murky when you're trying to appear more established than you are. If, for example, your marketing materials show a busy office full of people, there's nothing wrong with that as long as you don't claim to have more employees than you actually do. If a company wants to give the impression that it's more established than it is, there's nothing wrong with that, as long as it doesn't lie about the details.
