Callanan & Klein Communications, a five-year-old boutique public relations firm in the Boston market, believes in the old adage about doing well by doing good. Its client list includes a host of nonprofit organizations, as well as for-profit companies, and pro bono work is an important part of its vision, says Erin Callanan, a principal in the firm. It is committed to delivering stellar results for all its clients, but it has sometimes been hampered by a lack of technology and limited financial resources to address that need.

"Winning this contest is going to make a big difference in our continuing push for excellence," Callanan says. "The most important way it's going to improve our productivity is by eliminating redundancies." Lacking a shared central storage solution, the agency had to "recreate the wheel" on every project, she explains. Updated press lists might be on any one of several computers and multiple versions of documents were often floating around. "Now we'll have a central storage point for everything that we can all access," she says. "And with Microsoft Sharepoint, we won't be emailing documents back and forth anymore. We can work on them together and have reliable version control."

Company Profile:

Callanan & Klein Communications is a boutique public relations firm, founded in 2005. In five years, the company has grown to annual revenues of close to $500,000 and is on the verge of breaking through to the next level. We've built relationships with a host of non-profit and for profit companies, implementing successful campaigns for organizations such as the Life is good Foundation, The Boston Globe, House of Blues Boston, One Mission and others. We have a vision of being one of the most successful boutique agencies in New England and a commitment to get there by delivering stellar results for clients we believe in. Non-profit and pro-bono work is important to our vision - we believe that by doing good, we will be successful. But like many small businesses, we are challenged by the resources available. Every purchase is a critical decision. That means that we haven't implemented some of the technology solutions that would increase our productivity. Our laptops aren't networked - so even something as simple as scheduling a meeting requires a phone call or conversation. To share documents, we email them back and forth. Our website is in dire need of an upgrade - but the $12,000 quote we received last fall was just a little bit out of our budget. Our computers are four years old - and still running Microsoft XP. A Comcast Productivity Upgrade would make an unbelievable difference to our business, making it easier to do the work we love.
