Feb. 20, 2007 -- More than 500 blind business owners are expected to take part in this year's National Association of Blind Merchants conference on March 7 in Denver, organizers said this week.

The annual event, known as the Business Leadership and Superior Training conference, or BLAST, brings together business and community leaders for speeches, workshops, hands-on training sessions, and networking opportunities. It also offers technology demonstrations, including the new handheld Kurzweil-National Federation of the Blind reader, which features an innovative currency-identification mode, organizers said.

The event also includes indoor rock climbing, go-cart races, and human bowling.

"BLAST is all about moving out of one's comfort zone," Kevan Worley, president of the Colorado Springs chapter of the National Association of Blind Merchants, said in a statement. Worley said blind business owners are shattering public misconceptions about blindness. "Sight is not a prerequisite for success in the business world or in any other aspect of life," he said.
