The inevitable buzz over Mark Zuckerberg's 30th birthday won't peak until he hits the milestone on May 14, but the Facebook CEO still managed to be a hot topic of discussion on social media in the last week.

According to data gathered for Inc. by social intelligence company Synthesio, Zuckerberg received 14,506 mentions on Twitter and other social platforms between May 2 and May 8. The previous week he had gotten more mentions (17,996), but was second to Tesla founder Elon Musk among the 25 top tech CEOs Synthesio tracks.

Zuckerberg generated steady online discussion throughout the week, including for a new initiative by his political advocacy group, FWD.us, in which people take "selfies" and write messages in support of immigration reform. The group then turns the photos into postcards and sends them to members of Congress.

The initiative generated many Twitter hits for Zuckerberg, but it also showed his influence on the conversation even when his name wasn't mentioned. Here's the contribution from Ashton Kutcher, just one of a host of celebrities who tweeted a selfie.

Musk, the most buzzed-about CEO in Synthesio's rankings a week earlier, was a distant second last week with 10,543 mentions. His top single-day mark by a wide margin came on May 2, when he received 3,195 mentions. Interestingly though, a large portion of that total came from tweets of Inc.'s story about his previous week's social media success.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer had the most mentions in any single day during the May 2-8 period, receiving 4,644 on May 7 after an appearance at the TechCrunch Disrupt NY conference. Mayer fielded questions at the event about Yahoo's mobile strategy and the company's plans for after it sells its multibillion-dollar stake in the soon-to-be-public Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba

Synthesio also tracks the social buzz of a group of 25 startups, including Uber, which experienced a small spike on May 6 after Google announced it would integrate the taxi-hailing service into the Google Maps app. Uber received 4,252 social media mentions that day, more than twice its total the day before.
