Events Lose Money as Storm Forces Cancellations
Like it or not, New York City-based entrepreneurs are taking a forced vacation.
As Hurricane Sandy threatens the East Coast with record-breaking floods and other dangerous conditions, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered an evacuation for many parts of the city while also shutting down all forms of public transportation. Unsurprisingly, the move has forced many businesses and business-based events to shut down until further notice. Below is a list of the NYC events that have been canceled or postponed by the hurricane.
The D: Dive into Mobile conference has been postponed until further notice. The two-day conference, hosted by tech site All Things D, will announce the new time and location at a later date. According to All Things D, ticket holders will be able to use the tickets they have already purchased for the rescheduled date or the D: Dive into Media conference scheduled for February 2013. They can also return their tickets for a full refund. "We deeply apologize to attendees, presenters and sponsors, but the situation is truly out of our hands," the site said in a statement.
Facebook has canceled two events this week. First, the Facebook Gifts event scheduled for November 1st at toy store FAO Shwartz has been canceled, All Things D reported. A Facebook spokeswoman also confirmed to the news site that Facebook canceled Tuesday's open house for engineers, which was set to take place in Facebook's New York City offices. At the time of publication, Facebook had not announced a make-up date.
And Facebook employees looking for their first opportunity to sell their shares of the company's stock will have to wait just a little bit longer, CNNMoney reported. While today was supposed to be the first day that Facebook employees could sell and trade their formerly locked-up company shares (which amount to 234 million shares), the New York Stock Exchange announced that it would close on Monday, according to the news site.
Google canceled its Android announcement event in New York City, according to The Washington Post. Google will reschedule the event at a later time, the newspaper reported. Google was expected to announce its new line of smart phones and tablets at the event.
The Big Apple Smackdown Tourney, a ping-pong tournament between the tech industry's biggest icons, has been postponed, according to BetaBeat. The blog, which is co-hosting the event, said that it will announce a new date for the tournament as soon as possible.
Stay tuned for further cancellations and delays.
