Elon Musk (and the Gigafactory) Ruled Social Media Last Week

Social media went crazy after Musk made news for two very different reasons.

Elon Musk edged out Mark Zuckerberg as the most discussed tech CEO on social media last week, according to data gathered for Inc. by social intelligence company Synthesio.

Musk's social media mentions surged on Tuesday, July 29 following reports that he would be making a cameo in a future episode of The Simpsonsthen spiked again on Friday, August 1, the day after Tesla Motors announced Panasonic would help build its future battery manufacturing plant known as the "gigafactory."

Musk generated a total of 5,136 mentions last week, compared to 3,732 for Zuckerberg, though the Facebook founder did attract the highest single-day mentions on among the 25 tech executives Synthesio tracks. Zuckerberg's mentions peaked on Monday, July 28 after reports that Facebook's record-high share price added $1.6 billion to his net worth. With $33.3 billion to his name, Zuckerberg passed Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to become the 16th richest man in the world.  

In startup news, action camera company GoPro and music streaming app Spotify generated the most buzz on social media last week, accounting for half of all social media mentions among the 25 startups Synthesio tracks. 

GoPro's higher-than-expected financial results from its first earnings report as a public company last Thursday, July 31 led to much chatter on social media, while Spotify made waves on Tuesday, July 29 by announcing a new feature that lets users adjust audio settings based on the type of music they're listening to.
