Social Media's Stars Last Week: Spotify and GoPro
Music streaming app Spotify struck a chord with Twitter users last week, generating the most social media buzz among 25 prominent startups tracked for Inc. by social media intelligence company Synthesio.
Spotify unveiled new features for its iPhone app via Twitter last Monday and made headlines throughout the week by hinting that its music streaming service will soon be available in Canada. The startup's 42,053 total social media mentions last week just barely edged out action camera company GoPro, which remained hot on social media all week, generating a total of 41,659 mentions.
GoPro's soaring stock price helped keep the startup in the news last week, but the company's social media mentions peaked at 6,344 on Thursday, July 10, after analysts called the startup overvalued and its stock price fell.
Among tech titans in the news last week, Elon Musk attracted a flurry of attention after pledging a $1 million donation to the Tesla Science Center in Long Island last Friday, July 11. The donation to help turn the former lab of scientist Nikoa Tesla into a museum helped Musk generate 11,995 social media mentions last week, the most for any of the 25 tech CEOs tracked by Synthesio.
The highest single-day mentions last week, however, went to Apple CEO Tim Cook, whose name came up 4,146 times on Monday, July 7, the same day Apple's stock moved to its highest price since 2012. Apple also made headlines last Monday for hiring Jean-Claude Biver, the former sales director of TAG Heuer.
