Why it's growing: Second time's the charm. In 1997, CEO Eric Doebele co-founded Handyman Online, a broader matchmaking service that raised $27 million and grew to 350 employees. That site had high volume, but contractors had to wade through a ton of projects, while homeowners often heard from all sorts of handymen, many of whom were unqualified. Doebele sold that site, then launched this company in 2001 with a tighter focus. Contractors, who are the paying customers, get fewer leads but they're worth more; homeowners hear only from vendors with the right expertise. The company is now expanding nationally.
