How I Did It: Barry Hartzberg, Satory Global

00:10 Barry Hartzberg: My name is Barry Hartzberg. Satory Global is my first company. My business partner, Anne Isaacs, and I started it in 2007. I am based out in Washington, DC, and at the core of it, it's a management and IT consulting firm.

How has company culture contributed to your success?

00:25 Hartzberg: In order to be successful, you and your team has to work very hard. For us, we wanted to make sure that we rewarded that both on a company level, but also on the employee level. So try to create the atmosphere that if you're successful, then you're going to be acknowledged, even if it's some, a thank you, take someone off for dinner. People tend to appreciate that.

00:45 Hartzberg: The other side is more of a family feel, you know, a tight-knit group. You want to create an environment where people feel very comfortable. There's trust, there's openness, and people can collaborate. Because of collaboration is when the company actually succeeds. So that family feeling is what I found to be one of the biggest things to have a successful culture, at least the culture that we want.

What's your advice for entrepreneurs?

01:12 Hartzberg: The number one rule that I've heard and learned is don't let age be a factor. No one knows how old you are. And old or young, it doesn't make much of a difference on how successful you can be in running a company. I think straight out of business school... I did not go to a business school.

01:35 Hartzberg: I think one of the things you have to do is set your goals with it, and set your goals very high. When you set it this high, then this is the maximum that you can achieve. But if you set it this high, then that room is much more lenient. So I think setting those goals, realistic goals, are extremely important. And following up on those goals. And every so often, revisiting those, and seeing if they're still practical. Then, maybe if, whether every couple of months, whether it's every couple of years, every business, every industry is different. See what's working, see what's not working. See where you are, reevaluate, and then continue to set those goals.
