The beginning of a new year means a fresh list of things you resolve to do in 2013, whether they're personal, professional, or--most likely--a combo of both.
But what are some things that you should stop doing in 2013? After all, getting rid of old habits and old ways of thinking is just as important as committing to new ones.
Here are five "un-resolutions" to consider for 2013:
1. Don't delay on getting a mobile version of your website.
More than half of U.S. adults who own mobile phones use them to go online, according to the latest Pew Internet study. That's a huge business opportunity you're passing up. Check out Dudamobile, which can create a mobile-friendly version of your site for you in a few minutes for almost nothing.
2. Don't use the "spray and pray" method with your email marketing.
You know, sending everyone the same message in the hopes you'll hit a few that like what you're offering. If your response rates have diminished over time, then look at your lists and target those who want that specific message or offer from you. Think quality over quantity.
3. Don't succumb to each and every social media network.
Start small with one or two that make sense for you, see how they work and then decide if you want to do more with social media. LinkedIn and Twitter are really great for business-to-business companies, and Pinterest and Facebook can work really well if you're marketing to consumers and you've got great imagery to show. Be strategic about your time and efforts.
4. Don't ignore content marketing.
Don't think you've got content? I'm sure you take pictures at your business, and you probably have some great customer stories. You probably even have a few videos that would be awesome for your own YouTube channel. And I'm sure you've got some press or a four-star review. Include all of this content in any message you put in front of your customers, be it through email, on your site or in your social feeds.
5. Don't eat bad pizza.
If you're going to take in those carbs and calories, make it the best flour + water, mozzarella and sauce that you've ever had.
