Less than 24 hours after launching a campaign to produce a new magazine, the Good staffers exceed fundraising goal.
For a group of Southern California editors, Tomorrow is looking a little bit better.
At the beginning of the month, a team of staffers simultaneously laid off at Good announced a Kickstarter campaign to produce a one-off magazine they were calling Tomorrow.
Mission accomplished: By Tuesday afternoon the Kickstarter page, which went live Monday at 9 a.m. PST, had already raised $7,000 more than its $15,000 goal.
“It was pretty intense,” says Tomorrow staffer and former Good managing editor Megan Greenwell.
Within the first 15 minutes of launching, she says, Tomorrow had already raised a fifth of its target. Greenwell says that she and a co-worker literally had to take a hike to keep from obsessively refreshing their pages--and that by the time they made it back down the hill, Tomorrow was fully funded--and then some.
“We were literally standing on the sidewalk, just laughing,” she says. “It was the weirdest feeling of being overwhelmed, really humbled, and just gratified that people are responding to this project.”
The Kickstarter page offers funders a variety of rewards, depending on contribution levels: acknowledgement in the issue (tentatively scheduled for October), a copy (or more) of the magazine, entry to a launch party, stickers, and other goodies.
Greenwell says one of the biggest challenges was turning journalists into entrepreneurs. “We had to take a crash course in setting up a small business in the state of California,” Greenwell says, describing the learning process that took place as the staff prepared to launch the Kickstarter page. “I now have a better understanding of what small businesses must go through, what start-ups go through."
With 29 days still left in the Kickstarter campaign, Greenwell says that she and fellow staffers plan to use the extra money to pay contributors and create an ambitious, exciting design for the magazine--and, just maybe, to plan for a second issue.
