Why Banks Treat Small Business That Way

Mr. Cohen seems to feel that banks are in the venture capital business and seems miffed when a lender does not agree with his rationale in providing loans to all applicants.

Our responsibility is to our depositors, our community, and our stockholders. We will not lend to an applicant unless we can be relatively secured and there is a reasonable expectation of repayment. We cannot finance ideas.

I would rather have an applicant angry at me for not making a questionable loan than have to foreclose on personal assets of his family because of a default.
