Although Enterprise's radial drill presses are sold through a national network of distributors, these local sources make little, if any, provision for service support.

"Before we installed the 800 number," says Hollinbeck, "customers with maintenance problems could only write letters or call the manufacturer or distributor at their own expense."

Toll-free coverage can be arranged in a variety of ways -- regional, statewide, East or West Coast, or nationwide -- depending on your sales territory. The cost for single-state service varies, but interstate rates, set by the Federal Communications Commission, are $35.35 per month. To the base charge is added a usage fee that starts at $19.14 per hour for the first 15 hours and gradually decreases with volume.
