Sun Sets New Hours

Thirteen years ago, Sam Warren needed to find part-time secretarial and typesetting help for his suburban weekly newspaper in Jackson, Miss. "The problem was finding conscientious and hardworking employees," explains Warren, publisher of the Northside Sun.

Warren found a solution that has pleased him ever since. He advertised for and hired women who wanted to work while their children were in school. "By arranging jobs that could be handled between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., we found quality employees other companies were unwilling to hire," says Warren.

Marene Lewis, for example, went to work as a secretary for the Sun eight years ago when her youngest child was in the fourth grade. Today, the 49-year-old Lewis is the Sun's office manager and works full-time.
