Take The Credit
By eliminating Bell telephone credit cards and switching to another long-distance carrier, Bill Kist & Associates Inc., sales representatives for audio-video equipment in Great Neck, N.Y., trimmed its monthly telephone bill by 60%.
Because credit card calls are operator-assisted, they are more expensive than calling with cards issued by other phone companies that have lower long-distance rates, such as MCI, SP Communications, I.T.T., Western Union, and U.S. Telephone Communications. Using these carriers' cards, you simply punch in a 5- to 7-digit number, then the 10-digit number you wish to call.
Another cost-saving suggestion from telephone consultant Harry Newton, president of Telecom Library Inc. in New York City: "Make sure salespeople get a copy of the telephone bill with their calls to see how much they've spent. They have to see the bill in order to get the impact."
