Taking It Out In Trade
Business barter need not deal exclusively with business. An owner can tap a company for personal benefit as well. One merchant, for example, recently was searching barter lists for a condominium in Reno, an Excalibur car, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and a Rolex President watch; at the same time he was building a house with lumber that his business had taken in trade. An entire wedding -- flowers, entertainment, catering, honeymoon, and diamond ring -- was staged without a dime changing hands. And, fittingly, when the industry's trade organization gathered in New York last May, the meeting expenses, including hotel rooms and meals in a variety of restaurants, were bartered.
