Hammond Medallion World Atlas. Hammond, Maplewood Nj 07040; 672 Pp., $60.
In Iran, Pahlavi is now called Enzeli; the African island of Fernando Po has been changed to Bioko; Cuba's infamous Isle of Pines has been renamed Island of Youth. For these reasons and because of some 8,000 other changes that Hammond has introduced to its first revised edition since 1971, the well-known U.S. mapmaker claims it is necessary to change your atlas every 10 years. And anyone examining this incredibly detailed (U.S. zip codes are included) reference work would certainly agree. For a companion piece, The London Times's atlas manages to encapsulate world history through 1980 in fewer than 200 pages. And it is a creditable job, at that.
