Times Change: In Pittsburgh, the spiritual center of the Rust Belt, high-technology workers now outnumber steelworkers. While the steel business continued to disintegrate, the number of high-tech jobs grew last year at a rate of 29%, to at least 44,000. If this trend continues, local business leaders expect 1,000 high-tech companies in the area by 1990, compared with about 400 today.
