Introducing The 1986 Inc. 100

Change 1981-85 600.81%

HOW THE INC. 100 ARE SELECTED

The 1986 INC. 100 is the eighth annual ranking of the 100 fastest-growing publicly held smaller companies in the United States. Companies are ranked by the percentage increase in net sales (or total revenues) over a five-year period -- in this case, 1981 to 1985.

* To be considered for the INC. 100, each company must meet the following criteria:

1. The company is an independent corporation. Banks and utilities are excluded.

2. The company was publicly held as of December 31, 1985.

3. The company shows an operating/sales history of at least five years.

4. The company's 1985 sales exceeded its 1984 sales. Companies showing growth over the five-year period but a decline in 1985 sales are disqualified.

5. The company's 1981 sales were at least $100,000 but no more than $25 million.

* The INC. 100 research staff used company prospectuses, 10-Ks, annual reports, and various directories to maintain the in-house database of publicly held smaller companies. INC. narrowed the list by applying the five criteria listed above, and by using a five-year growth cutoff of 600%. INC. then conducted telephone interviews with executives of each qualifying company to verify the figures.

* An editorial research team led by special projects editor Sara Baer-Sinnott selected the 1986 INC. 100. The research was conducted by Sarah Clifford, Andrew J. F. Hamilton, and Rachel Leahey. They were assisted by research assistant Deborah L. Merritt, administrative assistant Ruth Keren, and interns Bonnie Barber, Beatrice Bast, Lisa Lee Freeman, and Lisa Poller. The published material is the only information INC. will make available.
