Matters Of Degree

In "The Hottest Entrepreneur in America" (February), writer Tom Richman describes the growing number of businesses started by women. "Some of them," he states, "are beauty salons and day-care centers, but some of them aren't." This sounds like "Some of these women are real businesspeople."

I own two salons. I must do the same payroll computations that real businesses do. I have an employee manual, business systems that work for me, incentives for employees, and so on.

Please explain to me in a future article what it is exactly that constitutes a real female-run company. I thought I knew.
