The New Artisans
Management Group
A not unimportant part of the artisan economy involves providing services to other artisans.
Jim Lansing's three-person San Francisco Management Group provides the business expertise many artisans sorely lack. Take, for instance, the architecture firm of Holt & Hinshaw. Lansing first met Marc Hinshaw last year while trying to collect on a bill that the architecture firm owed to one of Lansing's clients, Graphic Reproductions. As Lansing tried to coax the money out of Hinshaw, he quickly realized that the architect's problem was not that he didn't have enough work but that he was lousy at managing his cash. Lansing put together a loan package that allowed Hinshaw to pay off his firm's creditors and get in front of its bills, including the one from Graphic Reproductions. Now he helps to keep Holt & Hinshaw financially on track as its part-time business manager.
